Is someone calling you late at night and hanging up?  Do you get phone calls from random phone numbers and when you answer you only hear heavy breathing on the other end?  If someone is harassing you and you don’t recognize the number, or if they are always calling from a different number, it’s time to take action and perform a reverse directory lookup.  Here’s what you can expect from a reverse phone number search:

1.  Make sure you always write down the number the person is using to call you.  If they are calling from a blocked number, call your phone company and tell them to block calls from unlisted or blocked numbers.  This might be all it takes to stop the harassing calls.

2.  If you have the number, do an internet search.  If it is a landline number, you might get lucky and find some information.  If it is a cell phone or unlisted number, you will have to do a paid search.

3.  Reverse directory lookups on cell phone or unlisted numbers will cost you a small fee.  This is because the numbers are not public record, so the directories have to pay to access the records.  If the person harassing you is using multiple numbers, it might be worth it to pay the fee for unlimited searches.  The yearly fee costs about double what it costs to search for one number, so it is worth it if there are a lot of numbers on your list.

4.  Once you have the information about the owner of the number, you need to file a complaint.  Call your local police station and explain to them what is going on and tell them the information you have.  If the person harassing you is local, they will be able to contact them.  If it is someone out of their jurisdiction, they will give you further instructions about how to proceed.
